How to Get to Wachirathan Waterfall
Wachirathan Waterfall sits on Highway 1009, the road up Doi Inthanon, about 21–22 km into the national park from the Chom Thong entrance. It is an easy half-day stop on the way to the summit.
By car or motorbike (most common)
From Chiang Mai, take Highway 108 south to Chom Thong, then turn onto Highway 1009 and follow signs for Doi Inthanon. The waterfall is well signposted on the left at around Km. 21–22. The drive takes roughly 1.5–2 hours. Rental cars and motorbikes are widely available in Chiang Mai.
Taxi or private car
A private taxi or grab-style car from Chiang Mai is convenient for small groups and avoids driving the mountain road yourself. Agree on a round-trip price and waiting time, as return transport can be hard to find at the park.
Joined tour
Many Doi Inthanon day tours include Wachirathan Waterfall along with other stops such as the twin pagodas, the summit, and nearby waterfalls. This is the easiest option if you prefer not to plan the route.
Parking & the walk to the falls
A car park sits just off the highway. From there it is a short, mostly flat walk of about 5–10 minutes along a boardwalk and wooden bridge to the main viewpoint and the base of the falls. The path is easy for most visitors, with only a few steps; take care as the boardwalk can be slippery when wet.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Wachirathan Waterfall from Chiang Mai?
It is about 70–80 km south-west of Chiang Mai, roughly a 1.5–2 hour drive via Highway 108 to Chom Thong, then Highway 1009 (the Doi Inthanon road) to around Km. 21–22.
Can I get there by public transport?
Public transport is limited. Most visitors go by rented car or motorbike, private taxi, or a joined Doi Inthanon tour. A few songthaews run the Chom Thong–Doi Inthanon route, but they are infrequent and do not stop on a fixed schedule at the waterfall.
Where do I park, and how far is the walk?
There is a car park just off Highway 1009 near the waterfall. From the car park it is a short, mostly flat walk of about 5–10 minutes along a boardwalk and wooden bridge to the main viewpoint and the base of the falls.
Is the walk difficult?
The main viewpoint is easy and suitable for most fitness levels. There are a few steps and the boardwalk can be slippery when wet, but no steep climb is required to see the waterfall.
Should I join a tour or drive myself?
Self-driving gives the most flexibility and lets you combine Wachirathan with Sirithan and Mae Ya waterfalls on the same road. A tour is easier if you prefer not to drive, and usually includes a guide and other Doi Inthanon stops.
